UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Baku over the weekend, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stephanie Tremblay said in a statement to Report.

Tremblay said that the secretary-general will speak at the opening of COP29:

"The secretary-general will speak at the opening ceremony of COP29 on Tuesday and will call on world leaders to increase efforts to reduce fossil fuel production and consumption and to reach a fair and effective agreement. He will call on member countries to develop the carbon market and make fundamental changes in climate financing along with other measures. The Secretary-General will also call on member states to submit national contributions to align with 1.5 C target."

Tremblay added that Guterres will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 15 to attend the G20 meeting and will return to Baku for the conclusion of COP29.
